The Elephant in the Room is an ongoing project exploring disability rights and representation of minority in Egyptian society, through the life of a Cairo-based artist known as WeirDo.
Egypt, 2023-ongoing
As we sit in Omar’s aka WeirDo’s room, while he paints, one of his favourite tracks blasts:
“Maybe they were gonna be a painter
until somebody said they couldn‘t paint
Maybe thought they was the next Jean-Michel’
Til somebody yelled, „No, you ain’t”
Who said it would be impossible?”
Those lyrics resonate deeply with WeirDo's story.Diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy at nine and living with a shortened life expectancy, he relies on a wheelchair and caregivers for daily mobility. "I call myself WeirDo because I often feel like an outsider," he says. "I’m different from everyone else in the room, and I chose this name to embrace that difference instead of feeling ashamed". He chooses not to be defined by his physical limitations or societal expectations. Instead, he uses his art and self-expression to challenge these boundaries. He pursued his dreams and passions, becoming a painter.
Despite his determination, WeirDo faces significant discrimination in public spaces and deep-seated stigmas surrounding his condition. Even though marginalized, he remains a fierce voice for disability rights, inclusivity, and the representation of minorities in Egypt.
